We’re doubling down on innovation (great for you, great for us)

29 May 2025

We’re here to innovate, but always with purpose.

Things like brewing our own beer have created new ways to connect with you. Implementing the four-day week showed how we can redefine our productivity and create better working environments for our Tribe.

Our journey to becoming a B Corp has been a natural progression of our desire to do things better and challenge ourselves. And the introduction of TG Alertness has helped us monitor our Tribe’s wellbeing more accurately. All these innovations have benefitted our Tribe and our clients.

But we’re not done yet. We know we don’t have all the answers and as our new external innovation coach, Tom Penford puts it…

“The best way to change internally, is to look externally.”

Introducing our innovation coach

Tom Penford has worked in commercial innovation across many different sectors for over a decade. He is the founder of Untitled Concept, which specialises in human-centred business design. They integrate innovation into strategy and design, driving growth and sustainable success for the organisations they work with.

We first met via Freshwalks. We talked about TG Alertness and how Tom could help us expand the app’s capabilities, especially by using AI to enhance our work and support our Tribe’s growth.

Having an innovation coach in Tom will help us advance our thinking. It presents us with an exciting opportunity to step back from our day-to-day tasks, shift our mindset and reimagine the way we do things.

Tom’s aim is to give our Tribe more time, something that we need to traverse carefully as a four-day business in a five-day world. His help lets us focus on what we love and what our clients love about us. And we’re not going to complain about that.

“It's just another tool. I trained as an accountant - you get Excel to do your numbers, so we don't have to add everything up. AI is just an exponential example of that… it's about leveraging it and using it as a tool, rather than suggesting it could replace anything.”

Ignoring AI isn’t an option

Some people love it, some people fear it, everyone’s talking about it. AI is here and it’s not to be ignored. Rather, it’s to be used to our advantage – but as Tom says, it’s not something we should be afraid of.

“I always start with the customer. My approach is: outcomes focused innovation with human-centred design.”

Human-centred design

Artificial intelligence is on the rise, but real human intelligence is still just as important. And it always will be.

For us, that’s about looking at what our clients need. We’re asking ourselves questions about how we can best serve them, and how we might use AI to be more productive. With Tom’s help, we’ll work together to adopt AI into Tyler Grange in ways that serve our Tribe and our clients equally. Through external help from our innovation coach, we reimagine and redesign ideas internally, together.

“Just because you've got a new drill doesn't mean that it’s the right tool for digging a hole in the ground.”

The need to be bold

As much as AI is here to factor into innovative thinking, it needs to be carefully considered. We must be mindful that a new tool might not be the answer to every challenge we face

As we interrogate our methods and investigate AI’s usefulness, we need to be brave and recognise where we might need some support. We’re proud that our team has been bold with their ideas and designs for Tyler Grange. It’s what’s got us this far as a business and what has driven us further.

“Look at the app that Tyler Grange created. Look at the four-day week. Look at them being transparent about salary. They’re doing things differently, cooking up a storm. They seem to have an appetite to do it, which is good.”

A flywheel effect

Bringing in experts like Tom to support our journey’s next chapter will have a flywheel effect. One small change leads to another, getting bigger and more impactful with momentum. Putting the effort in now will create more space and time for further innovation in our future – and keep it going.

We like to think that we’ve been innovators in our industry and relish the challenge to take this a step further. With an expert guide through an innovation coach, we can’t wait to see the impact that Tom can have for our Tribe and our clients, we’re really excited to get going.
