How we’re trying to make Tyler Grange somewhere everyone can flourish

28 Sep 2026

Environmental consultancy hasn’t always been the easiest sector for everyone to enter, and in some ways, that’s still the case today.

Many people arrive through the typical routes – certain degrees, certain networks – and that can shape who sees the industry as a place they belong.

We’re aware of that, and we’re also aware that no business has it completely figured out.

But that’s something we’re actively trying to change.

“One thing that’s really important to us is creating an environment where people feel they can be their authentic selves.” – Lucie Waldron, People and Culture Lead

Making it safe to be open

People do better work when they can be honest about how things are going – whether through admitting they’re overwhelmed with their workload or asking for support before problems grow.

Over the last few years, we’ve put a few foundations in place to support that kind of openness.

A four-day working week

Since 2022, the whole team has worked a four-day week.

Having an extra day away from our desks each week gives people more time to rest and manage life outside of the office, so they come back on a Monday morning with clearer heads.

Clinical psychological support

Everyone at Tyler Grange can access sessions with Dr Suzanne Brown, a Clinical Psychologist, ISTDP Psychotherapist and Director at Emotionally Connected. Sometimes people need a confidential space to talk things through and having that support available is so important to us.

Confidential wellbeing and coaching support

In 2025, we introduced “Ask Seb”, a WhatsApp support service hosted by Seb Randle at The Helpful Space. It gives our team a safe, low-pressure way to share everyday challenges and ask for advice.

Mindfulness through Mindfulness Peak Performance (MPP)

We began working with Luke Doherty and the team at MPP in 2025 to bring mindfulness coaching to Tyler Grange. Their sessions teach our team how to manage everyday pressure and stay present in their work and personal lives – something that’s easier said than done in a busy consultancy.

Daily alertness tracking

Our internal TG Alertness app lets people log their daily happiness and fatigue levels. It helps our team reflect on how they’re feeling and gives managers a better understanding of how their teams are doing.

Creating real opportunities inside the business

A supportive culture matters, but it needs to be backed up by the way a business operates.

How people apply and the interview process play a part in whether someone feels able to build a career in our industry.

Pay is a huge part of that picture. In 2024, we became an accredited Living Wage Employer, meaning that, as a business, we ensure all our employees are paid a fair and real living wage. We’re also open about salaries, so people can see how roles are valued and how progression looks as they grow within the business.

As Lucie explains, “One of the things we’re really interested in is creating more opportunities for people and making it easier for them to gain skills, particularly those who might not have had those opportunities before”.

Work doesn’t look the same for everyone

We’re learning that people don’t all work or think in the same way, which sounds obvious when you say it out loud, but isn’t always reflected in how workplaces are designed.

We know that some of the most useful changes come directly from conversations with our employees and we keep looking at where small changes can be made to remove unnecessary barriers for our team.

To ensure everyone at Tyler Grange feels supported and seen, we’re undertaking work to become an accredited Includability employer.

We’ve undergone an audit on 6 pillars of includability, giving us a clear direction and actions to develop our inclusion strategy further. We’re excited to get started and see what other ways we can support our team from initial recruitment right through to leadership and governance.

There’s still more to do here, and we’ll always be learning, but it’s already clear that when different ways of thinking are properly supported, the quality of decision-making across the whole of Tyler Grange improves.

Why this matters for our work with clients

The way we work internally feeds into the work we do with clients.

It shapes the conversations we have and the way we approach projects from the outset.

When people are comfortable speaking up, we’re more likely to notice extra details that may otherwise have been missed. Things like how certain communities may respond to a proposal or how spaces could be used once they’re built.

It also means we take a little more time to properly challenge ideas before setting on an approach – even if that means a few more conversations along the way.

For our clients, that leads to work that’s more grounded and connected to the people it’s designed to be for.

As Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) expectations continue to develop, more attention is being paid to how organisations operate day to day – which has always been part of how we think about the role we play.

We know this isn’t finished work (it never is)

As Lucie puts it, “There’s a lot we’re doing, but we’re always trying to do better and learn more”.

As we grow, there’s always a balance to strike between scaling the business and keeping hold of what makes Tyler Grange feel like Tyler Grange. That includes how we support people every day, and how we keep adapting our approach to inclusion and wellbeing.

If there’s one thing this all comes back to, it’s that building a workplace where people can flourish takes attention.

That’s what we’re trying to do at Tyler Grange. Keep listening to those around us and adapting in ways that feel right for the people in the business and the work we do for clients.

If that sounds like the kind of place you’d want to be part of, or the kind of consultancy you want to work with, we’re always up for a chat.
