What would a two-year planning delay mean for you?

That’s often the unfortunate reality, because many planning authorities are asking for two years’ worth of wintering bird data. If the survey window has been missed, the entire planning process can be knocked off course until enough ecological data has been collected. This is why it’s crucial to seek ecological advice as early as possible to identify the survey requirements for your site.

What are wintering bird surveys?

Wintering bird surveys record the species, numbers and behaviour of birds using a site during the non-breeding season, which in turn helps identify any potential planning constraints.

Why do planning authorities need this data?

Planners need evidence showing whether notable or protected bird species use your site. Without it, they may not have enough information to assess the application.

Does this affect my site?

If your site is close to a Special Protection Area, this is something you need to be thinking about now. Wintering bird surveys typically take place between September and March.

What can I do about it?

Talk to us! The earlier, the better. Our CIEEM-certified ecology consultants can help you understand whether surveys are needed and, if they are, book them in as early as possible. So you can relax knowing the ecology is taken care of and your project is on track.
