What is arboriculture and what does it mean for you?

There’s a lot of talk about Arboricultural Impact Assessments, tree surveys, and other services on the way. But first things first, what is arboriculture and why do you need our help?

Arboriculture is the study, cultivation, and management of trees. If your development has trees within it or its borders, you have a duty of care to ensure that they are regularly inspected and maintained so they’re as safe as reasonably possible. Depending on your needs, arboricultural input is required for planning applications with work such as Arboricultural Impact Assessments, Tree Surveys, Protection Strategies and management plans.

What does the arboriculture process look like?

The arboriculture team usually starts with a BS5837 Tree Quality Survey to assess the quality of trees on your site. Various measurements will be recorded, and most importantly the stem diameter of the trees on site which is used to calculate the Root Protection Area (RPA), which is essential to know for development plans.

An Arboricultural Impact Assessment follows this survey to assess the impacts of the development proposal on existing trees within the site. This will also detail the necessary mitigation or compensation requirements to account for any potential loss of trees.

Next steps may include an Arboricultural Method Statement which details the methodologies needed to ensure your trees are adequately safeguarded during development.

Each project looks different, so our experts will work with you to ensure the right course of action is taken to meet your development needs and objectives.
