Client: Brockwell Storage & Solar Ltd
Sector: Rewnewables
Tyler Grange was commissioned by Brockwell Storage & Solar Ltd to provide multi‑disciplinary environmental consultancy services in support of a proposed solar farm development at Tollgate Farm, located near Welham Green, St Albans. The project required a robust ecological evidence base to inform the planning process and ensure that the scheme could balance renewable energy delivery with environmental stewardship and biodiversity enhancement.
Our team:

Produce a BS5837-Compliant Arboricultural Assessment:
The BS5837 Tree Survey aimed to identify, categorise, and assess all trees on site which was typed out in a full fledge report. This was supported but determining arboricultural constraints such as defects and canopy spread. Part of this, highlighted tree protection and retention opportunities were needed to support design development.
Complete a full suite of ecological surveys:
The Data Search Report confirmed which was conducted found relevant ecological records across the project site. It also assisted with identifying protected and prioritsed species and statutory constraints. This all lead to informing ecological planning requirements and further survey needs.
The landholder wanted an ecologically diverse site following an agreement to use the land. Tyler Grange had multiple meetings with the stakeholders such as the RSPB and Buglife on how to enhance the site for a range of species particularly on the west side of this site.
Provide Landscape & Visual Evidence for Planning:
The Landscape team provided photoviewpoint sets for this project. This helped capture the representative viewpoints to build knowledge on assess visibility, landscape character, and key receptors. The visualisations supported planning submission for the site.
The outcome is a development proposal that successfully balances housing and energy infrastructure objectives with environmental protection and enhancement. By combining detailed ecological baseline assessment, targeted species surveys and pragmatic mitigation design, Tyler Grange supported the delivery of a compliant planning submission that embeds biodiversity considerations within the evolution of the scheme.
This case study demonstrates our ability to interpret ecological data, apply relevant legislation and guidance, and translate ecological constraints into deliverable mitigation and enhancement strategies that align with both client objectives and planning policy requirements.
