Client:Taylor Wimpey Strategic Land
Sector: Mixed-use Developments
Tyler Grange’s ecology and landscape planning teams worked together to provide sustainable residential development integrated with the local landscape in approximately twenty fields within South West of England. This included works to secure the site’s allocation and Preserve and enhance ecological value, including hedgerows, mature trees, and wetland habitats and to deliver green infrastructure.
The team:
Carly Goodman-Smith – Operations Director
Anneliese Walker – Landscape Director
Laura Hembrow – Ecology Associate
Integrate Existing Landscape Features: This project aimed to retain and enhance important natural elements such as hedgerows, mature trees, and existing watercourses. There was also a need for structural planting and woodland blocks to embed new infrastructures to help visual harmony with the surrounding countryside.
Deliver Strategic Green Infrastructure: To assist in providing green corridors to connect habitats and support biodiversity. Tyler Grange also incorporated a Sustainable Urban Drainage
Systems (SuDS)!
Promote Sustainable Development: Tyler Grange aligned the design with ecological enhancement principles, supporting species-rich planting and wildlife corridors and Ensure the
development respects conservation areas and listed buildings nearby, maintaining cultural and visual integrity.
Ecology and Landscape: Tyler Grange’s ecology and landscape teams conducted detailed assessments and consultations with stakeholders and assisted in public consultation and were part of design review panels (DRP) to add in our inputs. Nature Park Design: The team worked closely with project managers to design a Nature Park to help balance biodiversity with recreation and designed an entrance road as a tree-lined “green gateway”.
Challenges:
Hedgerows were species-poor and in moderate condition, while amenity grassland was assessed as poor. Some fields failed habitat condition criteria, requiring enhancement measures in the masterplan
Planning and Design Review: The Design Review Panel highlighted concerns about how the development would integrate with Backwell village, address active travel networks, and mitigate traffic impacts at Station Road junction
The project successfully transformed initial constraints into opportunities by delivering ecological enhancements and biodiversity net gain. The project achieved the planning compliance and design excellence through reviewing of internal work. The development balances housing delivery with environmental stewardship.
