Tyler Grange was appointed by Vita Group to provide ecological support for the redevelopment of the former Axis Square site at Goods Station, a landmark mixed-use regeneration scheme in Birmingham city centre. The proposals comprise a residential-led development including purpose-built student accommodation, serviced apartments, residential accommodation, public realm, landscaping and associated infrastructure across a 2.18-hectare brownfield site.
Our commission included delivery of an Ecological Impact Assessment, UK Habitat Survey, Biodiversity Net Gain assessment, ecological data review, Ground Level Tree Assessment and bat emergence surveys. Working closely with the wider design team, Tyler Grange applied the mitigation hierarchy from the earliest design stages, helping to steer development away from the site’s most ecologically valuable features while identifying opportunities to deliver meaningful biodiversity enhancements within a highly constrained urban environment.
A key challenge was balancing the delivery of a high-density city-centre development with evolving Biodiversity Net Gain requirements. Tyler Grange led the biodiversity strategy, undertaking detailed statutory metric assessments and advising on habitat creation measures to maximise biodiversity value within the development footprint.
The project successfully showed how ambitious city-centre regeneration can align with contemporary ecological policy requirements, creating a new sustainable neighbourhood while delivering measurable ecological
improvements and a robust pathway to achieving the mandatory 10% Biodiversity Net Gain requirement.
